Crathornes in Northumberland All but 4 of the 33 IGI Crathorne records from Northumberland are likely to be from one extended family, whose father had three sons, William, Henry and John. All three married and raised their families in Bedlington, a little village on the River Blyth north of Newcastle upon Tyne. William had a son William with his first wife, who presumably died, then seven further children with his second wife Jane Bulman. Henry had a daughter, Wilmott, with his first wife but then no other children. John and Margaret had two sons, Robert and Ralph, keeping the family names from the main line at Crathorne. There were then grandchildren for William and John, but after that no further family records from Northumberland. Did they all move? Or die? It seems a strange puzzle. The other interesting question is who was the 'Beddlington Crathorne' that gave rise to William, Henry and John? Born about 1620, he was the right age to be a younger son of Thomas and Catherine Richart who married about 1603. But it seems more likely that he was from an earlier generation - possibly a grandson of Peter Crathorne, a younger son of James and Elizabeth Sayer who married about 1520. The truth is yet to be found. And 'Bedlington Crathorne' was born about the same time as the Robert Crathorne whose family grew up in Long Newton, County Durham. Were they closely related?
