Crathornes in the USA

Crathornes emigrating from England to the USA include the following:

  • Francis Crathorn, born 1793 in Kings Norton, Worcestershire emigrated in 1851 with his wife Jane, and grown up children Clarissa (31) and Fred (29).  They settled in Wright Township, Wayne County, Iowa, and were followed a few years later by their remaining son Francis (Frank) and his young family.  There's more on the Iowa page.

  • A year later their cousins Benjamin and John Crathorn emigrated, settling for a while in Indiana.  What little is known about them is on the Indiana page.

  • Edmond Crathorn, born on 2 April 1832 in Birmingham, married Mary Ann Grant and the couple had three children before Edmond tragically died aged just 26. However his wife and their two surviving children emigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah in the 1860s and gave rise to a large Craythorne (and Craythorn) clan. Click on the Utah link for more.

  • In 1889 another of the Kings Norton Crathorns emigrated, this time George (born in 1846) with his wife Eliza Pursall and their family.  The settled in Elwood, Kansas.

  • George Nightingale Creathorn, born in 1880 in Leek, Staffordshire, was descended from the Shoreditch Creathorns, and emigrated to the USA in 1904 with his new bride Edith Hordern.  They had two 2 sons in New Jersey, who travelled with George back to England, returning in 1908, before Edith died in 1910. George remarried Annie Akhurst, and the couple had a son Russell in New Jersey in 1914.

  • Edward Craythorn and his wife Ann Maria, who arrived at Ellis Island on 31 July 1914, having sailed from Liverpool on the Lusitania.  Edward was born about 1864 and their home town was Middlesbrough - but how they fit into Craythorns in the UK, and what they did in the USA is currently not known...

  • From about the 1890s, Crathornes entering the USA at Ellis Island, New York, are listed on the Ellis Island website - there's a summary here.
