Crathornes in New Zealand The ship 'Gentanner' sailed from Gravesend, Kent on 8 June 1857, and after a very rough crossing during which several masts were broken, arrived at Lyttleton, near Christchurch, New Zealand on 3 October 1857. Amongst the 163 passengers were William Craythorne, aged 39, his wife Mary (39) and children Mary Ann (18), Fanny (14), Charles (11) and Emma (7). Although they are noted as coming from Leicestershire, the precise link has yet to be established. William could be the son of John Craythorne, who was born at Great Easton, Leicestershire in September 1817. Charles went on to marry Mary Ann Prebble, with sons Thomas and Charles setting up a Craythorne tribe that survives in New Zealand to this day. (information
