Crathornes in Australia

Crathornes emigrating from England to Australia include:

  • Thomas Craythorn, born in 1816 in Lutton, Northamptonshire, who emigrated in about 1854 with his wife Elizabeth Marshall and their young family.  They landed in Adelaide, and made their home in South Australia, ultimately giving rise to most of the Craythorns listed on the IGI.

  • Sarah Craythorn, (probably a distant cousin of Thomas) who was born in 1828 in Kings Cliffe, Northamptonshire, and emigrated in the mid 1850s with her husband John Palmer.

  • Thomas Crathorn, born in 1819 in Birmingham also apparently emigrated to Australia, but his death record in 1890 in Victoria is almost certainly the Thomas listed above.  More information is needed!

  • Eliza Craythorn, daughter of Charles and Ann Crathorne from Kings Norton, born in 1833.  She was transported to 'Van Diemen's Land' (Tasmania) in 1848, for a seven-year term for the crime of stealing a child's frock.  There she spent time on the prison ship 'Anson' and remained imprisoned until 1854.  In 1856 she married fellow convict Benjamin Flukes but the couple had no children and she died aged 35.  Her fascinating life story has been researched by Pat Simpson.
